President Bashar al-Assad has said he will not step down, as the conflict in Syria enters its third year. In an interview with Argentinian newspaper Clarin, he said ‘to resign would be to flee’.

He also said US and Russian attempts at peace talks were doomed to failure, claiming that rebel groups were too fractured to enable any kind of ceasefire or summit.

Assad blamed neighbouring states for supporting the insurgency, saying that they want to fuel the violence rather than stop it.

The conversation in the presidential palace was held amid the sound of gunfire as Damascus remains the focus of intense fighting.

On Saturday a car bomb in the capital killed three people, according to state TV, adding to a death toll that has already reached over 80,000.

Bees buzz over landmines after detection training

||

Croatian researchers have trained bees to detect land mines by associating the scent of the bees’ sugary food with the smell of explosives.

During the Balkan War two decades ago, 90,000 mines were buried across the country, according to a government estimate.

Some 2,500 people in Croatia have been killed by them since 1991.

The senior vice-president of the party led by Pakistani international cricketer Imran Khan has been shot.

Zahra Shahid Hussain was killed outside her home in the upmarket area of Defence in the southern city of Karachi.

Local reports suggest Hussain, 60, a member of the Pakistan’s Movement for Justice (PTI) party was killed during a robbery, but ex-cricketer Khan has blamed the city’s dominant MQM party.

PTI candidate Dr Arif Alvi was not confident Hussain’s killers will be found.

“I believe the Sindh government should investigate this murder, look for the killers and get them sentenced but unfortunately over the last five years nobody has ever been arrested for the killings to be tried in the court of law,” Alvi said.

Hussain’s death comes on the eve of a partial rerun in Karachi of last weekend’s general election after her PTI party accused MQM of electoral fraud.

In Georgia, a rally for International Day Against Homophobia has been dramatically bombarded by priests and thousands of anti-gay protesters. Wearing religious and national dress, they marched into a square in central Tbilisi chanting nationalistic slogans.

Their motivation came from recent comments from the Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church, who called the Gay Rights rally an “insult” to tradition.

Zaza Davitaia, who took part in the anti-gay demonstration said: “We are against the rally which comes in contradiction to Georgian morals and traditions.”

A Georgian Orthodox priest, Archimandrite Ioanne, explained why he was against the gay rights rally: “It is unacceptable in any way, especially today. It’s their plan to try our patience.”

Police escorted the gay rights supporters onto buses and drove them away to avoid violence.

Organisers had hoped for a peaceful demonstration outside the old parliament building, with no more than 50 Georgians rallying in support of gay rights.

However, its thought at least 17 people, including journalists, were injured in the clashes.

Morocco’s 21st century day of terror is remembered every May 16. It is 10 years since Casablanca was rocked by five explosions in twenty minutes. They killed 45 people and injured over 100, the country’s worst-ever terrorist attack.

Several NGOs got together in the city on Thursday to call for peace and unity to counter extremist ideologies.

“We are still living in this painful life; we ask all Muslims in Morocco to become a model for Arab and Muslim world and to not participate
in terrorism,” said victim Mohammed Karam.

In Rabat the 10th anniversary was marked by Salafists who say that ever since the bombings they have been persecuted and imprisoned.

“We have organised this sit-in to demand the truth about the explosions of 16 May 2003 in Casablanca. Ten years later we still do not know the real cause of these explosions. These events have caused thousands of casualties among Islamists who have been tortured and imprisoned, and all without us really knowing who was behind the attacks,” said coordinator Anas el Halaoui.

The attacks were on Western or Jewish targets; the first carried out in Morocco by Moroccans. Six European lives were lost in total, and the country was shocked by the indiscriminate carnage of the suicide bombers.
