Emergency workers are searching for survivors in the US town of Moore, Oklahoma State, after a deadly tornado hit on May 20.
Officials confirmed that 24 bodies, including several children, had so far been recovered from the wreckage in the devastated town.
Earlier reports on the death toll were higher, but officials said that in the chaos some bodies may have been counted twice.
Plaza Towers Elementary School was reduced to ruins.
Oklahoma State Trooper Betsy Randolph explained how the rescue efforts began: “They started searching for people immediately, like at the school, more specifically. We went over there because it was such a confined area and such devastation.”
“We had to be careful as we stood on debris, that we weren’t standing on people buried underneath,” Randolph continued.
The three kilometre-wide tornado in Moore ranks among the most severe in recent US history. Authorities issued a warning to the town 16 minutes before it hit.

There is fresh tension on the ceasefire line in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Syria says its troops have destroyed an Israeli vehicle which crossed into its territory.
Tel Aviv has denied the report, saying a vehicle was hit by gunfire on its side of the ceasefire line. Israel also says that it returned fire after the incident.
“First of all our policy on Syria is clear. We are not intervening there, in the civil
war,” said Moshe Yaalon, Israeli Defence Minister.
“But, as for the situation in the Golan
Heights, we are not allowing and we will not permit, a spillover of fire into our territory.
“Overnight, a Syrian army target was
destroyed after gunfire spilled into our
territory in the Golan Heights.”
The incident is the latest on an increasingly fraught frontier. Syria and Israel have traded fire on a number of occasions in recent weeks.

Youths have thrown rocks and other missiles at police for a second night running in a suburb of Stockhom.
Around 100 of them came out on the streets and targeted officers and their cars.
The unrest was in Husby, a low income neighbourhood, home mainly to first or second generation immigrants where around a third of school children leave education with low grades.
Ten cars were set ablaze and one fireman was injured when he was hit by a rock.
The police eventually made six arrests.
“They light a fire somewhere and the fire service goes to the scene of the fire. The police have to escort the fire engines and the stone throwing starts again, “ said police spokeswoman Diana Sundin.
It is not clear what started the riots in a country which has always been proud of its diverse population and welcoming imigartion policies. However this year the government has indicated it is considering introducing quotas.

Saudi Arabia has executed five Yemenis accused for killing a Saudi national and committing robberies in several towns in the kingdom, the interior ministry stated.
The five men were executed in the southwestern town of Jizan and their bodies were displayed in public, near a university, according to an eyewitness.
In a photo uploaded in Twitter, five men are seen hanging from a rope tied to their waists on a horizontal bar between two cranes. It remains unclear whether they were beheaded or shot.
The number of people executed in Saudi Arabia this year reached 46, according to news agency AFP.
Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry said that Khaled, Adel and Qassem Saraa, Saif Ali al-Sahari and Khaled Showie al-Sahari had formed a gang which committed “several crimes in various regions in the kingdom and robbed stores”.
The gang had killed Ahmed Haroubi, a Saudi, by beating him up and strangling him, the ministry said.
Murder, apostasy, armed robbery, rape as well as drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of sharia, or Islamic law.
