Iran’s new president Hassan Rohani has vowed more transparency over its nuclear programme but neighbouring Israel is not convinced.

“The Iranian election clearly reflects deep disaffection of the Iranian people with its regime. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the power to change Iran’s nuclear ambitions which are determined and guided not by the president but by the supreme ruler Ayatollah Khamenei,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The European Union has also reacted to the new political landscape in Iran, with the EU’s foreign policy chief hoping for a swift diplomatic solution on the nuclear issue.

“I will continue with my work to urge Iran to work closely with me and with the E3 plus 3 to build confidence in the nature of a nuclear programme,” said EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton.

Rohani will be hoping to ease economic sanctions placed on his country due to its enrichment of uranium. Western powers fear the programme could enrich uranium to nuclear weapons-grade material.

Iran’s president-elect Hassan Rohani has said his country is ready to be more transparent over its nuclear programme, but it is not prepared to suspend uranium enrichment.

He was giving his first news conference since winning Friday’s presidential election, and said a new opportunity had been created for friendly relations between the Islamic Republic and the outside world.

“The government of wisdom and hope, as promised, will pursue national goals with a moderate policy designed to save the country’s economy and revive ethical considerations and constructive interaction with the world,” he said.

The words “moderate” and “constructive” may encourage those anxious to see Iran adopt a more conciliatory approach compared to that under Rohani’s predecessor. The hardline stance of President Ahmadinejad has been criticised as counter-productive at home, where Western sanctions have been biting hard.

The EU’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has said she will continue urging Iran to build confidence in the nature of a nuclear programme, following Rohani’s election.

Western powers suspect Tehran wants to build an atomic bomb. Iran insists it is only interested in developing nuclear energy.

In Egypt, newspapers are dominated by reports of the president cutting diplomatic ties with Syria.

Mohammed Mursi’s government has hardened its stance against the Assad regime, saying the Syrian people are facing ethnic cleansing, and calling for Hezbollah to withdraw.

On the streets of Cairo there were mixed views on the president’s decision.

One local resident said: “The decision to close the Embassy (the Syrian Embassy in Cairo) is a great decision, it shows the Syrian people (who oppose Assad) that we are supporting them.”

However a Syrian man living in Cairo disagreed: “The decision to close the Syrian Embassy is a crime towards the Syrian people because that way President Mursi is murdering the Syrian people, he is not helping them.”

Egypt has shut down the Syrian embassy in Cairo and withdrawn its diplomatic staff from Damascus. Mursi has also called for a no-fly zone over Syria. Western diplomats say they are considering a limited zone over parts of the country.

Karachi rocked by bomb as Pakistan goes to the polls 11/05/2013 15:35 CET

A bomb explosion has ripped through a bus in western Pakistan. At least eleven died in the carnage. The attackers then fled the scene and stormed the hospital in the city of Quetta, where the injured were taken to. It is reported a further ten people died in what developed into a gun battle with security forces, who were surrounding the building.

A police source said the victims on the bus were all female students from various ethnic groups. They included Hazaras – targets of a series of bombings this year.

Quetta has suffered a series of sectarian attacks. Bombings in the city at the start of the year killed almost 200 people.

Police believe the attack on the city’s largest hospital was aimed at government officials, one of whom was killed. Three members of the security forces and at least one nurse also died. It is not known which group was behind the attack.
