Team GhostShell Finishes The Year With Megahack on Orgs Including NASA and Pentagon Defense Contractor

Team GhostShell’s Project WhiteFox logo.
Team GhostShell published their “last project” Monday, “Project WhiteFox.” The hacking crew again used their signature method of announcing the large-scale hack, hijacking numerous Twitter  profiles to link to their Pastebin page and notify tech blogs and writers who have covered them in the past.
On the page linking to data taken as part of Project WhiteFox, Team GhostShell explained some of their actions over the past year or so. They also revealed that “DeadMellox” was a ploy, writing that he “was a ghost to begin with.”
“We used the name afterwards to trackback all mentions of that name all over the place,” the hackers wrote, adding, “Well, the whole plan is a bit more complicated than that, part of a bigger story, but let’s leave it at that for now.”
The organizations hit by Project WhiteFox include The European Space Agency, NASA’s Center For Advanced Engineering, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), a defense contractor for the Pentagon and Aquilent, an intelligence firm that states on its website that it makes “technology work for you.”
In a survey of some of the data Team GhostShell posted to various paste-up sites, Betabeat noted login information including emails and passwords as well as the texts of what appear to be internal communications.
Team GhostShell ended the long list of links to hacked data with a rundown of its ops from 2012. These included #ProjectDragonFly, which Team GhostShell termed “a real cyberwar upon China” in the name of freedom of speech and #ProjectWestWind, which famously hacked top-shelf educational institutions around the world to protest “school policies that had spiked tuition fees, outdated reforms and unprepared school faculty.”
While Project WhiteFox is supposedly the team’s final exploit for this year, Team GhostShell signed off with a hint they’d return, writing, “who knows, maybe we’ll see each other again next year.”
Hundreds of systems administrators and IT security staff around the world probably hope Team GhostShell is done for good. Read More

Philippines police forcibly evacuated people from low-lying areas after they refused to join an estimated 25,000 others who had sought refuge at government shelters, Cagayan de Oro city Mayor Vicente Emano said in an interview with ABS-CBN television

Forecasters reported that the storm, moving northwest, is slightly weakened at the moment. Bopha is expected to reach the country’s southern island of Negros, bringing heavy rains.

A similar disaster hit the same region in 2011, killing 1,500 and affecting around 10 percent of Philippines residents.

The country is hit by about 20 typhoons a year, with another storm expected around Christmas.

At least five people are reported missing on the central island of Leyte and off the coast of the southern Mindanao Island.

Three people were hit by falling trees, while another person suffered a heart attack as the typhoon struck Mindanao, civil defense chief Benito Ramos told AFP. All four are in unknown condition, Ramos said. One other person was reported missing on the central island of Leyte.

Philippines President Benigno Aquino warned residents in the areas affected by the typhoon to take the disaster seriously: “It could be the strongest to hit the country this year. But we can minimize the damage and loss of lives if we help each other.”

Why is Hef getting hitched?

It looks like those two crazy kids are going to settle down at last. In a relationship marked by more fits and starts than Carrie and Big’s nuptials, 86-year-old media magnate Hugh Hefner and his 26-year-old lady friend Crystal Harris have spent the past few days making some very public noises that they’re back together. Is this yet another attention-getting stunt from the rapidly becoming obsolete Playboy brand, or is this what love conquering all looks like? It’s an unusual twist: The two ended their engagement in 2011, when Harris got cold feet a mere five days before the scheduled nuptials. A Playboy cover featuring “Mrs. Crystal Hefner” had to be hastily slapped with a “Runaway Bride” label. Last summer, however, she moved back into the mansion and confirmed she and Hef were “back together.”Continue Reading… Read More

Pope joins Twitter

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Benedict XVI, the pope known for his hefty volumes of theology, is now trying brevity – spreading the faith through his own Twitter account. The pontiff will tweet in eight languages starting Dec. 12 using his personal handle (at)Pontifex, responding live to questions about faith during his weekly general audience, the Vatican said Monday.Within four hours of the Vatican’s announcement, Benedict had already garnered 100,000 followers on the English version of (at)Pontifex alone. He may never hit 1 billion faithful that the Catholic Church counts around the globe, but he’s odds-on to get 1 million followers by the end of the year, British bookmakers Ladbrokes said. The pope sent his first tweet last year from a Vatican account to launch the Holy See’s news information portal, part of efforts to increase the church presence in social media and spread the faith. A personal Twitter account for the 85-year-old Benedict has been the subject of intense speculation ever since; Monday’s news conference was packed in an indication of the interest it has generated.Continue Reading… Read More

Stevie Nicks On Fleetwood Mac’s Reunion Tour, Rihanna, Kanye West & Her Early Years In Music

Between producing and recording music with Fleetwood Mac and relentlessly touring her own albums, Stevie Nicks is pretty busy. So busy, in fact, that her bandmates publicly expressed their frustration when she told them she wasn’t going to tour as Fleetwood Mac last year. She had other priorities, namely supporting her latest and “favorite solo album,” “In Your Dreams.” But this is Stevie Nicks, so even prickly bandmate and former lover Lindsey Buckingham agreed to wait. Nicks has kept her word: After a three-year break, Fleetwood Mac is heading on a 35-city tour that starts April 4th (tickets go on sale Dec. 7).HuffPost Entertainment called Nicks to speak to her about the tour, but the genial singer was eager to chat about pretty much anything, up to and including: her advice for Rihanna, her concerns about the future of the music industry and a special letter to Kanye West she wrote but never sent.Read More…

Australian surveillance ‘out of control’: 20% increase in 1 year

Access to private data has increased by 20 per cent by Australia’s law enforcement and government agencies – and with no warrant. Australians are 26 times more prone to be placed under surveillance than people in other countries, local media report.

In such a way, state structures accessed private information over 300,000 times last year – or 5,800 times every week, figures from the federal Attorney General’s Department showcase.

The data includes phone and internet account information, the details of out and inbound calls, telephone and internet access location data, as well as everything related to the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses visited, the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) reports.

Australian media report that every government agency and organization use the gathered telecommunications data, and those include the Australian Crime Commission, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Australian Tax Office, Medicare and Australia Post.

New South Wales (NSW) Police became the biggest users of the private data, with 103,824 access authorizations during the last year – a third of all information accessed by the security forces.

The news triggered massive public outrage, with Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam telling SMH, ‘‘This is the personal data of hundreds of thousands, indeed millions of Australians, and it seems that just about anyone in government can get it.”

He said the move demonstrated the current data access regime was “out of control” and amounted to the framework for a “surveillance state”.

The reports come as the federal government proposes even wider surveillance powers, including a minimum two-year standard for telephone and web providers – a measure causing public controversy.

The president for the local NSW Council for Civil Liberties, Cameron Murphy, told the Australian Financial Review that, according to the statistics, recent proposals to step up police surveillance powers and keep internet and phone data for two years or more was little more than a “fishing expedition”.

“It’s stunning and completely outrageous that so much interception is going on,” Murphy said. “What seems t
429
o be happening now is this is being done as a matter of first course and not as a matter of last resort.”

The statistics gathered by the council demonstrate that Australians are 26 times more likely to be placed under surveillance than in comparable countries.

However, a spokesperson for Attorney-General Nicola Roxon indicated that “these new statistics show telephone interception and surveillance powers are playing an even greater role for police so they can successfully pursue kidnappers, murderers and organized criminals.”

Ludlam, on the other hand, detailed what the expansion should be accompanied by.

“It’s incumbent on the parliament’s national security inquiry to recommend some form of warrant authorization be introduced, and that there be a review and reduction of the government agencies that can access the personal communications data of millions of Australians,” he said.
