If your last name is Phelps and you haven’t won 22 Olympic medals, it’s generally understood that you’re probably a hate-mongering member of the worst family in America. But now, two Phelpses are breaking ranks, and trying to add a little shine to a tarnished nomenclature. In a surprisingly public display of soul-searching, Fred Phelps’s granddaughter Megan Phelps-Roper declared Wednesday that she and her sister Grace have left their Kansas congregation, and apologized for the pain their organization has inflicted. Or, as she said in a text message to the Kansas City Star, “We ripped the Band-Aid off.”
